Cultus Luciferi – The Splendour Of Chaos ()

"Cultus Luciferi" sounds like "Black To the Blind" and "De Profundis" era Vader. Influences are primarily drawn from Morbid Angel and Slayer in equal measure. The drumming on this album is reminiscent of Doc's legendary work with Vader and while it isn't nearly on the same level of intensity and technicality yet it is refreshing to hear this more old school approach in today's all-blast standard of drumming. The song structures and riffing is vintage Vader with plenty of tempo changes, start-stop sections and tons of groove. Vocalist Mirko Dreier uses a throaty growl/grunt similar to Vader's Piotr "Peter" Wiwczarek. Purgatory know the strengths of their inspirations and while they are hardly as prolific, both excel in delivering classic European death metal in its purest form. The production of "Cultus Luciferi – The Splendour Of Chaos" is reasonably good, although it is on the rough spectrum and might scare novice listeners. The guitar tone is undefined and raw whereas the drums sound underproduced and muddy. Overall, this is similar to what hampered Vader's own "Black To the Blind" album back in the day. The artwork, design and lay-out are superb and in fact remind of the work of highly acclaimed Polish graphic designer Jacek Wisniewski (Decapitated, Houwitser, Krisiun, Monstrosity, Vader). "Cultus Luciferi" is a highly recommended album for those who can't get enough of the old Vader sound.
