Finland has always been a fertile breeding ground for potent black metal. On their third record Behexen furiously continue down the trail of their first two records, yet do things a little differently. "My Soul For His Glory" isn’t nearly as hateful as "By the Blessing Of Satan" nor oozes it with primitive despair like their "Rituale Satanum" debut did. In comparison to 2004’s "By the Blessing Of Satan" the bass guitar plays a less prominent role compared to the guitars, although it’s great to have a bass-heavy black metal record coming from Finland and not from Greece where its commonplace. As with 2000’s "Rituale Satanum" the crust influence is still around and as the album isn’t play at top speed the grim atmosphere flourishes thanks to the many dark midpaced sections. The vocals aren’t long exclusively blood curdling high-pitched and the excessive blasting of the past has been replaced by more moody midpaced sections. Vocally, this is more of a dark metal direction the band has taken with grunts, whispers and the likes. Overall, this gives the record a slight Darkthrone vibe, think "A Blaze in the Northern Sky" and "Under A Funeral Moon". The production is similar to Watain’s "Casus Luciferi" - a band which Behexen also slightly mimics in riff structures and use of melody. The medieval styled artwork filled to the top with inverted Christian symbolicism and occult references that is just amazing in execution and presentation. If only more black metal bands would follow this example. Generally speaking, this is an album of change for Behexen. It remains to be seen how their die hard fanbase will react to these changes.
