Combining black metal with martial ambient, early industrial and spaced out psychedelia Lansing, Michigan duo Empire Auriga explore the direction set by label mates and contemporaries Leviathan, Brown Jenkins and Azrael. ‘Time Expanding' is a depressively majestic track with sparse militant drumming and wailing clean vocals. ‘Sorrow Song' is brooding industrial and ethereal ambient in equal measure and is slightly reminiscent of Samael's current direction. ‘Dreaming of Breath & Stars' gives off a (very early) Mortiis vibe with its primal rhythm and demonic vocals. ‘The Lurker' is a chaotic little nummer that forms a great interlude. ‘Waiting For the Fate' is the first track to feature guitar and is the most black metal sounding track of the record. ‘Soul Interrupt' is another bombastic sounding interlude which provides "Auriga Dying" with a nice flow while simultaneously adding to the grim atmosphere the record is blessed with. Closing track ‘Dust & Ether' is once again much like an industrial interpretation of (very early) Mortiis. The post-apocalyptic atmosphere is overbearing and the use of industrial gives "Auriga Dying" a cyber-punk feel. The production is good, but might be a bit on the rough side for those who crave their music pristinely produced. This band is especially appealling to fans of later Burzum and Nortt. Great spooky ambient/industrial.
