Australia's Fearscape play semi-progressive melodic death metal that takes cues in equal measure from bands like Arch Enemy, "Terminal Spirit Disease" era At the Gates and a lesser degree Symphony X. Debuting on the Christian metal specialist label founded by Mortification's Steve Rowe "Scent Of Divine Blood" is a self-released album that offers a vast array of influences and styles that will appeal to a wide audience of extreme metal fans. The music is symphonic, melodic and progressive without overstating any of these facets. The album opens with the gargantuan, 10 minute title track which starts off with a lengthy intro that would have fitted Pink Floyd or Alchemist. The midpaced riffing is reminiscent of (early) At the Gates - the riffs in ‘Falls Of Crimson Free' especially - and in its faster parts of Arch Enemy, whereas the demonic rasps recall Dimmu Borgir. ‘Abaddon Destroyer' starts off with a slight Oriental melody but quickly picks up pace and twists into a choppy track with jazzy, exotic bass lines that recall Atheist's iconic Roger Patterson. Vocalist Matt Brown applies a number of different vocal styles the bombastic ‘Inheritance Of Dust' gives him to change to display his vocal abilities as it features his emotive clean vocals most prominently. The production is incredibly pristine with a thick but clean guitar tone, a healthy audible bass and drums that sound massive but don't overpower the whole. "Scent Of Divine Blood" was recorded at Origami Studios in Sydney, owned by Aria award winner Anton Hagop (Silverchair, Powderfinger) and engineered by Daniel Leffler (Metallica, Fear Factory). With a convincing repertoire, the high end production and impressive artwork "Scent Of Divine Blood" is everything a band like this could hope to aim for. A strong second album for this act that might make it big in years to come.
