Despite calling their first demo the same as the legendary Hellhammer's inaugural 1983 demo this where the similarities end for Belgium's minimalist black metallers Slecht. Claiming to be inspired by Flemish medieval painter Pieter Breughel, the elder, the band use a part of Breughel's 1562's painting from which the record derives its name. Like the formative Scandinavian progenitors of this particular genre Slecht uses the most primitive means to spread their message. The tracks of this record are reasonably simple in composition and the band's technical skills leave a lot to be desired. Vocalist JC has a good sounding morbid rasp but the rest of the band aren't up to scratch. The guitar work is thin, inanimate and tired sounding. The work behind the drum kit suffers a similar fate while occasionally breaking into a halfway decent ritual sounding part. The bass work is commendable but hardly worth mentioning as it exclusively mirrors the guitar riffs. The production is expectedly terrible and garage-like. As mentioned previously the guitar tone is thin and inanimate, the bass is audible but hardly goes anywhere. The drums sound reasonable with a organic sounding bass drum, a snare that doesn't sound like a tin can. The vocals however are mixed too up and front in the mix, most of the time they tend to drown out the other instruments. The artwork features a miniscule part of Brueghel's "Triump Of Death" painting, but the rest of the design and lay-out are typically underdeveloped and poorly executed. Slecht sings alternately in Dutch and English which reminds of other acts like Kludde or Wapenspraak en Drinkgelag. Belgium has a strong and blooming black metal scene with many bands worth investigating, Slecht is not one of them.
