Epic majestic black metal like (early) Lord Belial and (early) Enslaved. Like their inspirations Svartahrid play most midpaced black metal with great Norwegian folk melodies, gruff Viking styled vocals and a light background of haunting keyboards that make them sound as authentic as the progenitors of this genre. ‘Sons Of Mine' kicks off the record in a convincing way and forms a sort of call to arms for the remainder of the album. Without the use of extra instrumentation Svartahrid is able to recreate the classic black metal atmosphere of depression, darkness and alienation. The instrumental part of the band is up to par. While they aren't the most technically accomplished act out there today Svartahrid's excellent gloomy atmospheres make up for that. "Malicious Pride" is much more about dismal atmosphere than it is about being the fastest or grimmest. All tracks are of equal high standard and as such there's never a weak moment on this record. The production is truly great with a guitar tone that is thick enough for this genre while remaining clear and detailed to accentuate the melodies. The drum kit is well produced with a discernable sound for the various parts. The artwork, design and lay-out are simple but surprisingly fitting for a record of this kind. It's been a while since Scandinavian black metal has been done this well. Soulseller Records sure have unearthed a jewel with Svartahrid.
