In Greek mythology, Orthrus (also called Orthros, Orthos, Orthus, Orth and Orphus) was a two-headed dog and a doublet of Cerberus, both whelped by the chthonic monster Echidna by Typhon. After a deceptively atmospheric intro Virginia, USA-based epic black/thrash metal duo Orthrus convincingly kick off their debut album with the title track. This cut shows the band's strengths rather well. Highly charged black laced thrash metal with extensive lead work and gloomy mid-tempo black metal sections that remind of early Bay Area thrash or the better melodic death metal acts and the formative Scandinavian black metal acts, in general. The soothing instrumental 'Fields of Asphodels' gives way to the blistering 'Asmodeus' and gives the whole a good flow next to the obvious onslaught. Zagan and Jestan master their respective instruments well and producer/session drummer Brian Forman (Unburied) provides the whole with a clear, modern production that gives the guitars the expected crunch whereas the drums remain a bit sterile sounding. Although the production doesn't really holds much punch the album doesn't suffer from it. In fact the increased clarity unveils the rather interesting guitar work and shines whenever the band break into a lead section. Coupled with the high class artwork which recalls Ancient Rites' "Rubicon" of 2006 "Tyrants Of Deception" is a fitting debut for a band of this kind. While being far from original or revolutionary in any way or form - Dissection and Unanimated in particular spearheaded this genre in the early 1990's - "Tyrants Of Deception" is a well executed and strong written genre record that will appeal to thrash - as black metal fans in equal measure.
