Belgium's Psalm once were a metalcore band (their debut "Fortune's Complexity" and subsequent EP) but with the latest batch of line-up changes it has changed into a potent and promising death/black metal act that doesn't shun adventure and experimentation. After a fitting instrumental intro 'Through the Maze' Psalm start of their latest EP with 'Ecce Homo' - a defiant technical opus that displays the band's newly adopted influences. From the jagged, mechanical riffing to the infernal rasps, ghostly whispers and brooding narrated vocals by Thierry Psalm are a band in control of their doing. 'Layers Of Impiety' is more straightforward compared to the preceding track. The leads/solos in this cut are particularly well done and malevolent sounding. 'Exhortation' is the track where drummer Donat gets to shine and display his skills behind the kit. Psalm gets more moody with the rather melodic, alternative acoustic and emotional 'Paradox' , which contains some excellent guitar work and introspective vocals. The experimentation goes full swing with 'Renewal' wherein they apply choirs. "Manifest" is an excellent EP for those who like their death/black metal a little more daring and forward thinking compared to what the genre usually churns out. Be sure to give this band a listen!
