Like the band from whence they came Thy Final Pain has Six Feet Under (and to a lesser degree Massacre) as its biggest influence and inspirator. Marc Jüttner (vocals/bass) mimics Chris Barnes to a nearly absurd level. Simon Dorn (guitars) follows the rulebook set out by Six Feet Under and "Epitaph" is all groove with no recognizable hooks, sorely absent leads/solos or just plain mentionworthy riffs. The rhythm section is completed thanks to the use of a drum computer and while this would give the band the chance to open up their compositions the tracks of this record remain adamantly straightforward and uninteresting. The drum computer also suffers from a tin can snare and truly horrible cymbal sound which doesn't work in Thy Final Pain's favour. As expected this album is nearly constant at a comatose mid-tempo with no dynamics to speak of, except for 'Thy Final Pain' which with its increased tempo is the only interesting track of this record. Legendary seminal death metal bands such as Autopsy, Broken Hope, Gorefest and Morpheus Descends also played at midtempo but backed it up with strong writing and adequate mastery of their instruments - Thy Final Pain does not. Recorded at Crypt Of Pain "Epitaph" comes with a massive production that recalls Vader's "Litany" and Six Feet Under's "Maximum Violence" with its domineering drum production and thick guitar sound. The artwork for "Epitaph" is fittingly professional but does little to redeem the faults this album comes with. In times when bands such as Arsis, Decrepit Birth, Necrophagist, Origin and Psycroptic continue to push the death metal genre's boundaries in terms of endurance, technicality and diversity I'm surprised that bands like Thy Final Pain still are able to release albums.
