This Virginia duo present a vicious mix of black, sludge - and doom metal that pulls in the extremest of influences from either genre on their digital debut EP "Transcent the Flesh". Vocally, this sound like a mix between classic era Satyricon ("Nemesis Divina") and primal doomers Khanate. Besides these influences there's an overlapping sludge feeling that breathes out of this music. 'Transcendence (The Nativity)', 'Cause of Affliction' and 'Dragged Through Consciousless Depths (The Passage)' conjure an atmosphere of utter oblivion, torture and suffering. Surpassing any notion of a trend, Wolfsschanze present an art not easily categorized but genuinely esteemed for its creative form. The production is perfectly shaped for this kind of genre, overall there's enough clarity to the mix but it isn't too massive, clean or pristine. The rough edges maximize the blunt visceral effect this music aims for. The atmosphere is suffocating and oppressing thanks to the band's effective use of sparse dynamics and limited instrumentation. This is a dense and dark record that can easily compete with the best works within this genre. The artwork is much down the line of the latest works of Whitechapel and Heaven Shall Burn. There's good chance if you enjoy a band such as Goatwhore that Wolfsschanze will be right down your alley.
