On their second album “Ubermensch” Toronto, Canada-based symphonic black metal act Eclipse Eternal present a strong, conventional genre record. The record is mostly mid-paced with thick death metal riffing, haunting minimal synthesizers and battering drums with lots of double bass that remind of (early) Immolation and the likes. Vocally, this is down the lines of (classic) Dark Funeral, Mayhem and Setherial yet also including whispers, grunts and semi-processed vocals. The guitar work takes influences from various genres, not solely death – and black metal with interesting leads that could have fitted with an accomplished death metal band and masterfully controlled harmonies. All tracks twist and turn incessantly, going from moody midpace to blast sections in matter of seconds, greatly enhancing the grim atmosphere of this record. The use of synthesizer and piano is tastefully minimal, unlike many of its contemporaries the band uses these instruments of optional mood pieces while keeping the pedal firmly to the metal. Eclipse Eternal are certainly not the fastest black metal act on the global scene today, but their midpaced approach in songwriting gives the material on this album more space to evolve. The production by Eternal Sound Production Studios is solid with a thick yet clean guitar sound, massive sounding drums and clear vocal production. The incredible artwork for this album reminds me slightly of Necrophobic’s “Hrimthursum” and Setherial’s “Endtime Divine”. This record will surely appeal to fans of Emperor, pre-“Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia” era Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth (“Vempire”-era).
