Trondheim, Norway-based thrashers Manifest return with their second record “Hedonism” on Morningstar Records. From the first track ‘Chemical Solution’ its clear what this record is all about. Pumping, no-frills thrash metal with a solid groove that bears a striking resemblance to the late Pantera and “Chaos AD” era Sepultura. Vocalist Stian Leknes sounds a bit like Pro-Pain’s Gary Meskil and Mastodon’s Troy Sanders in his lower regions whereas his barking and shrieking betrays much of the band’s Scandinavian origin. The drum intro to ‘Machinery Of Violence’ is quite similar to Machine Head’s ‘None But My Own’ from their acclaimed debut “Burn my Eyes”. The drumming isn’t the most brutal but whenever they break into a tribal piece is when the percussionist really shines. It is however immediately clear that Manifest not yet master the same ability to write instantly memorable hooks and catchy songs. Also do the band’s track miss a number of recognizable leads to make the songs stand out more individually. This where the record’s biggest problem manifests itself, taken on face value all tracks on this record are of a respectable level. Given the sheer amount of music available today, it remains to be seen whether Manifest will be able to stand out from the crop. Yet there aren’t many bands that sound this accomplished on their second album. With a high class production job courtesy of Spiren Studio and producer Knut "Fug" Prytz and eye-catching artwork Manifest have all things to break out of the underground. “Hedonism” is a strong record that will appeal to any fans of the bands previously mentioned. Fans of pissed-off metallic hardcore, groove - and thrash metal will find lots to like here.
