After their exceptional second demo “Silvottuna ja häpäistynä” Finnish death metallers Ydin now return with their new 5 track mini-cd “Saasta”. From the onset it’s clear that the band’s Morbid Angel and Monstrosity influences haven’t diminished. With a new drummer in their ranks the work behind the kit has increased in speed, density and overall technicality. The riffing still juggles between both death – and black metal whereas the vocals of singer Punishment are in classic Swedish tradition, in its mix of grunts and high screams. As with their previous EP all tracks of this mini-cd are well written and competently executed with much thought put into the various arrangements. Once again self-produced by the band in their home studio “Saasta” comes with a much better production compared to their EP. The guitar tone is meatier and has improved in both definition and clarity. The bass guitar is more audible and prominently featured in the mix whereas the drums sound more massive and detailed than ever. Much attention has been paid to the lay-out of this disc. The booklet is richly designed and carefully constructed, providing English translations for each of the original Finnish lyrics. Ydin has improved in every aspect and while they aren’t breaking any new ground for the genre, I wouldn’t be surprised if they land a decent record deal by the time their next recording is launched upon the unexpecting underground.
