As a follow-up to their 2003 split album featuring Suture, Lehavoth and Leukorrhea Italian quality underground label The Spew now offers the second instalment in the series. Partaking in this second instalment are Switzerland's Mumakil, Holland's Obtuse and Poland's Third Degree (not to be mistaken with American and German bands of the same name). Mumakil - who recently also shared a split with US death metallers Misery Index on Power It Up Records - donate 9 tracks of their "Customized Warfare" record. Musically, Mumakil is quite close to both Nasum and Misery Index. Obtuse present 6 all new tracks on this split and are perhaps the most sloppy sounding of the three bands thanks to their questionable production values. The track 'That Mirryll' starts off with the spooky synthesizer intro of Lucio Fulci's veritable splatter classic "Zombie". In comparison to Mumakil, Obtuse doesn't blast constantly and regularly incorporates fitting groove sections and occassional stoner riffs. Concluding, Obtuse protest against all things modern R&B blasting away after briefly sampling a popular R&B tune of the late '90s. Poland's Third Degree, who at one point held various members of legendary pre-Vader act Slashing Death, also present 4 new tracks on this release. This somewhat reminds me of Relapse Records alumni Benümb and Uphill Battle. If you're into grindcore, powerviolence and the like then there isn't much of an excuse not to check out this record as there will be something for everybody. Another great release by The Spew that is worth tracking down. It will be interesting to see what The Spew digs up for the next instalment of this already legendary underground series.
