In late 2007 Displeased Records released the long awaited “Journey of a Misanthrope” DVD by prolific Australian one-man black metal project Striborg. Now, in the early stages of 2008 the label releases an all new Striborg album with “Autumnal Melancholy”. This album is much slower and the focus seems to lie on Striborg’s patented dirge tempos, sorrowfilled riffs, wailing demonic rasps and oppressive atmospheres. There’s not much progression or regression to speak of, but Striborg continues to adamantly produce albums that its fanbase will adore. There seems to be more focus on coherent song structures this time around as the majority of the material is easy to get into and reasonably accessible compared to usual Striborg standards. The inclusion of several moody ambient synthesizer interludes also greatly enhances the listening experience of this album. The production is notably improved compared to the other releases of the past with a powerful if not bare bones drum sound, audible minimal ambient synthesizers and a healthy thick bass tone. The guitar tone is still paper thin and fuzzy with not much definition or bite. The artwork, design and lay-out are sombre and in fact exactly what is expected of a record of this kind. Fans of Xasthur, Leviathan, Mütiilation and Ildjarn will find much to like here.
