Newcomers Of Sin ()

Modern melodic death/thrash metal from Sweden, much like their peers in Carnal Forge or Darkane. There are no drastic changes on this new album compared to the band’s earlier records “Subliminal Fear” (2000) and “Perfection In Pain” (2002). Generally speaking Corporation 187 plays at midpace with extended solos, groove sections and well-placed faster bits. The music is well played and superbly executed, but isn’t quite rushing out to be brutal. In fact, “Newcomers Of Sin” feels a bit tame and restrained compared to the older records in this genre. The riffs, drum patterns and general song structures aren’t quite as aggressive, angular nor as head-on as is to be expected. It is not until the middle of the album that it starts to take off and gets down to business. The spastic vocal work by Filip Carlsson adds to the hardcore vibe of “Newcomers Of Sin” but isn’t helped by the inert and unenthusiastic delivery of the rest of the band. The production and mix of this album is nothing short of amazing in its stunning clarity and definition, but is much too smooth for this genre. As a result the guitars and drums lose much of their impact due to the pristine nature of the recordings. The guitars are superbly produced, but they don’t exactly hold much punch or bite, the drums suffer the same fate. “Newcomers Of Sin” is an admirable album for a debuting band, but for the standards one expects of Corporation 187 it just doesn’t cut it. The unimaginative packaging doesn’t help matters either. If you want aggressive death/thrash metal that delivers then Finland’s Dauntless or Sweden’s Carnal Forge will provide your fix.
