Germany’s Askedal present a rather poor take on the suicidal black metal subgenre with this aptly named but incoherently assembled EP. Mainman Nox takes care of all instruments and arrangements and this EP was probably his sole vision. The few tracks on this EP plod onwards without any real sense of direction or purpose, the lack of recognizable hooks makes it difficult to tell the tracks apart. Nox and female vocalist Fr. Trieb share vocal duties and the fact that both sound virtually the same does absolutely nothing to make this project stand out from their peers. The production on this record is horrible with a paper thin guitar tone, distant out of tune shrieked vocals, sloppy drums and occasional synthesizers to provide some atmosphere. There’s no stand out track to speak of and if it weren’t for the occasional sample of gunshots this could easily become background music. The amateurish artwork, design and lay-out are also done by Nox and aren’t quite up to par like the rest of this product. Askedal would benefit from a full band setting, a better recording studio and some time to find their voice. With this genre being flooded by projects of all calibres and sizes it remains to be seen whether we’ll be hearing something from this band in the future.
