    Omega ()

With six albums and more than a dozen splits/EPs to their name they are a true force of nature in the scene. Azaghal’s assault is a lot like (early) Marduk in riffing, claustrophobic atmosphere and haunting vocals. The occasional synthesizer lines conjure the majestic and otherworldly feeling of classic Emperor. The drumming by Chernobog and synth player JL Nokturnal is the most barbaric to be heard in recent times. The riffing is unconventional in its use of underlying melody, while this may not be apparent on the first listening session numerous details unveil itself after a couple listens. Vocally, the typical shriek is avoided and the rasped vocals of Varjoherra are demonic in their own right. Like their Scandinavian brethren in Dark Funeral or Setherial this band excels at its instruments and the sheer brute force, togetherness and gusto with what this material is brought make Azaghal one of the primary contenders in their genre. The production is very fitting in the sense that its both clear-cut yet retaining enough raw edge to appeal to the underground crowds. The black-white artwork is typical for the genre and is executed very professionally. If “Omega” is any indiction than Azaghal might just be the best the scene has to offer at this point.
