Another genre project led by the industrious and productive Kyle Christman (Catatonic Atrocity, Found Gutted, Purulent Infection). Whereas his other bands find themselves in the goregrind and slam death genres Human Filleted is solid US death metal, quite reminiscent of acts such as (early) Deicide, Gorgasm, (early) Mortal Decay and Fleshgrind. The drum sound is warm and organic, but the guitars miss the bite and thickness a record like this need. The riffing is however dense and suffocating without loosing sight of structure or atmosphere. Much like the revolutionary acts of the early ‘90s Human Filleted change things up regularly and the combination of fast – and slow sections adds greatly to the macabre feeling of this record. Christman’s vocals remind of Jason Avery (Eulogy, ex-Monstrosity), Rich Lipscomb (Fleshgrind) or Mike Hrubovcak (Divine Rapture). The only thing amiss is here a number of slithering leads/solos to put some icing on the cake. The production on this album is quite solid with a clear but defined drum sound. The guitars are a bit on the thin side overall but the very audible bass makes up for that minor qualm. Artwork by Pär Olofsson (Mortal Decay, Odious Mortem, Psycroptic) is nothing short of breathtaking and proves why he is the most sought after artists of the last years. The logo by tattoo artist Jon Zig is surprisingly fitting but as expected quite messy as well. Human Filleted isn’t doing anything remotely new but this is definitely one of the better pure death metal bands out there today.
