Kentucky power trio Highgate debut on Israeli specialist doom label with this self-titled album. It comes as no surprise that the label has chosen to release this particular album as this is a harrowing record full of minimalist doom, experimental noise and grim black metal. Highgate feels as a mix between Eyehategod, Khanate and Burzum. The vocals by guitarists James Porter and Greg Brown are painful, desolate and straining. With painful throaty screams, punk-like shouts and black metal styled shrieking. The drumming by Steve Porter is minimalist in structure and almost tribal in approach. This self-titled album consists of one gargantuan track, clocking in at almost 50 minutes. The track is build up through various stages and sections which are neatly separated by well-placed tempo changes. This gives the track the feel of a regular album and not one long track, which is actually the case here. The production is clear and powerful but fittingly minimal, very much reminiscent of Khanate in that sense. The artwork is a typical collage and seems to recount the horrors and atrocities of war and global conflict. Be sure to pick up a copy of this album, as it is limited to 1000 copies worldwide. Totalrust have unearthed another gem with Highgate.
