Taking their moniker from the 1932 Lovecraft short story "The Dreams in the Witch House" and the album title from the 1931 Lovecraft novel "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" Austin, Texas duo Brown Jenkins have all things to create a harrowing mix of funeral doom and hateful black metal. Structurally this is very much like the genre's Scandinavian progenitors and Brown Jenkins doesn't sound American in any instance. The epic mid-paced riffing, minimalist drumming and occasional vocals fit to make a mesmerizing listening experience that works perfectly. The drumming is minimalist in structure and almost tribal in approach. While the vocals come in every once in a while its great to see an instrumental doom/black metal project and this gives Brown Jenkins additional points for originality. This will actually sit far better with the doom metal crowd than those looking for the next evil thing in black metal. Brown Jenkins has a knack for writing engaging funeral doom with black metal stylings. The production is clear and powerful but fittingly minimal, very much leaning towards the black metal part of the equation. Artwork, design and lay-out conform to archetypical underground black metal stylings and only consist of black-white.
