Brazilian trio Thorny Woods' first real outing after two demo sessions in 2004. The trio specializes in violent traditional black metal that feels like a mix between (early) Dark Funeral, Setherial and (early) Dissection. The riffing is dense and chaotic much like the early material of Swedish archfiends Dark Funeral while the structures and eerie melodic sensibilities of the guitarist and drummer harken to Dissection, circa "Storm Of the Light's Bane". While the band isn't about to reinvent the wheel "Lôbrego Macilento Prelúdio" is a high standard genre exercise that doesn't sound South American in any instance. Production values on this EP are exceptionally well with a guitar tone that sounds almost intact to Dissection's "Storm Of the Light's Bane" while the riffing is lifted straight from the Scandinavian ancestors, particularly of the Norwegian kind. Occassional guitar leads are short and chaotic, adding to the traditional feel of the genre's earlier outputs. The three tracks on this EP are executed with all the expected technical finesse, the songwriting is compact but epic with a good contrast of oppressive and haunting atmospheres while simultaneously alternating between electric and acoustic sections. The artwork and design by former guitarist Agamemnon is also fitting. "Lôbrego Macilento Prelúdio" is teaser for the upcoming concept album "Dendro Dreams" which the band is currently seeking a label for. In any case, this is not your typical South American metal band. If you're into archetypical hateful black metal with a slight sense of melody Thorny Woods might be just what you're looking for.
