Originally released in Europe in 2007 on the band's own Nightmare Productions "Rising" is now re-released in North America by Moribund Records. After a subtle opening piece with serene Gregorian like chanting Portugal's Corpus Christii kicks in with 'Stabbed', a track which is very reminiscent of the (early) Scandinavian black metal bands and to a lesser degree (classic) Enthroned. "Rising" is main composer N.H.'s sixth full album, the third and final part of the Torment trilogy. The riffing is reminiscent of classic Norwegian acts such as Emperor while the agonizing vocals remind of Mayhem's "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" at times. Corpus Christii alternates beautifully between fast blasting sections and dirgey mid-paced pieces, resulting in a moody album full of constrasting atmospheres. Also of note is Corpus Christii's multitude of vocal styles – breaking the trend of perpetual shrieking that plagues most black metal of this kind. "Rising" was recorded at Ultra Sound Studio in Portugal and this gives the album a production similar to Enthroned's recent "Tetra Karcist" masterpiece. The arwork, design and lay-out by Phobos Anomaly Design is fittingly brooding and abstract in tone and execution. With a playing time of almost a full hour "Rising" is a true genre gem waiting to be uncovered. Alongside bands like Watain, Deathspell Omega, Glorior Belli, Antaeus and Secrets of the Moon this Portugese act is amongst the elite of the new generation of misanthropic black metal played the way it should be.
