On their second demo Istanbul, Turkey based power trio Heretic Soul bring a modern, groove-laden interpretation of mid-nineties Swedish death metal in the vein of Unleashed, (early) Dismember and (early) Entombed. Just like those bands Heretic Soul plays well-structured death metal that is mostly midpaced with regular faster sections. Vocally, Sarp Keski like the Swedish pioneers before him uses a semi-shouted grunt. Drummer Erhan Karaca reminds a bit of Iniquity drummer Jesper Frost in style and direction, while he is not as fast nor as technically accomplished. The opening section of ‘Faceless’ sounds awfully familiar, although I can’t immediately place it. The production by Midas’in Kulakligi Studios, Ankara is much like the pioneering Sunlight Studios sound of old. The guitar tone is full of scooped mids and enhanced lows and highs that create a mechanical, electric buzz. There’s much emphasis on the bass and Orçun Kocakoç delivers admirable lines that complement the guitar work splendidly. Not just exclusively mirroring the guitar lines Kocakoç provides adventurous bass lines which add to the overall old school feel that fits this record like a glove. The artwork, design and lay-out are atmospheric and fitting but not entirely exceptional. “Life Becomes Our Grave” is a promising little EP which might just put Heretic Soul into the limelight outside of their native Turkey.
