The scene in Turkey is expanding. Decimation is the new band of former Cenotaph drummer Cem Devrim Dursun and this band is somewhat different, although staying in the death metal genre. Sounding like a mix between “Purification through Violence” era Dying Fetus and “Trading Pieces” era Deeds Of Flesh. Most of the material is fast paced, although there are mid tempo cuts such as ‘Diabolical Rebellion’ or the opening section of ‘Declaration Of Dark Secrecies’ which betray minor Morbid Angel influences. The riffs are solid, if not unremarkable. The lack of solos and leads also is detriment to the impact of the material. Overall, Decimation is treading water and while “Entering the Celestial Ruins” is a good offering for the genre – it doesn’t particularly stand out from the crop in any significant way. The production work is substandard as the guitar tone is inert and holds not nearly enough bite. This could be contributed to the fact there’s only one guitarist. The drums, especially the snare, sound hollow and tin. Vocally, this is in the vein of Fleshgrind, Gorgasm and similar bands. “Entering the Celestial Ruins” comes with appropriate epic artwork which complements Decimation’s mythological lyrical content. Decimation is definitely a promising addition to the Turkish extreme metal scene, alongside established acts such as Cenotaph. While they aren’t doing anything of the ordinary at this point, they might very well surprise us in the future.
