Somewhat of cult release in the (early) Finnish black metal scene “Promethean Gift” by Black Crucifixion is now available again. Originally released on Lethal Records in 1993, but now re-released on Paragon Records and Soulseller Records in September 2007 with different cover art, new liner notes, additional bonus tracks and previously unseen pictures. The music could be described as being along the lines of Varathron and Necromantia with a doomier slant to the proceedings. As all early black metal the structures are relatively simple, mainly power-chord driven melancholic riffs and the distant clean – and downbeat spoken vocals give the EP a minor influence of early Anathema. The discrete use of keyboards, acoustic and clean guitars additionally provide an epic edge to this otherwise rather straightforward affair. The additional four tracks include a 1996 studio track, 2 demo tracks from 1991 and 1993 and a live track from 1993. Those looking for a historical dark/black metal document will find much to like on this re-issue. Black Crucifixion also became known to criticize Darkthrone once or twice as “trendies” due to the fact that Darkthrone began their career as a death metal band. In a time where everything recorded in the nineties is supposed to be of intrinsic historic value Black Crucifixion are nothing short of a lost gem finally unearthed and restored in its former glory. “Promethean Gift” is recommended for anyone who seriously is into pioneering formative dark – and black metal bands.
