Returning two years after 2005's "Blessed Black Wings" San Francisco, California based stoner/sludge/doom metallers High On Fire deliver another slab of primal, fist-pounding metal. Founder Matt Pike (ex-Sleep, vocals/guitars) alongside mainstay Des Kensel (drums) and newly acquired Zeke bassist Jeff Matz pound forth another 11 tracks of highly Black Sabbath, Clutch and Motörhead inspired stoner/sludge metal. Pike's vocals have never sounded better and his Lemmy Kilmister approach becomes clearer with every consecutive record. The band's monolithic modus operandi remains intact with colossal riffs, frenzied leads and almost tribal sounding drums. From the stomping 'Rumors Of War', the bass-heavy chugger 'Turk' or 'Cyclopian Scape' to Oriental influenced tracks such as 'Waste Of Tiamat' or the entirely acoustic instrumental 'Khanrad's Wall' to droning doom tracks such as the title track, High On Fire isn't afraid to show its compositional range and muscle. "Death Is This Communion" was recorded and produced by famed grunge producer Jack Endino (Mudhoney, Nirvana, Soundgarden) and he provides the album with a highly detailed production that is almost too clean for a band of this kind. On the other hand High On Fire has never sounded better and while the pristine production job now reveals the numerous intricacies that the band puts in their songs it slightly takes away from the feel the band's earlier records had. As with "Blessed Black Wings" this record is also graced with another stunning artwork by Arik Roper. The first pressing includes a bonus DVD featuring in-studio footage of the making of the album. High On Fire has once again outdone itself with "Death Is This Communion". Definitely the best material they have done in years.
