Boasting two ex-Iniquity members, it comes as no surprise that the characteristic “The Hidden Lore” and “Five Across the Eyes” riffing of that band shines through in the material of Corpus Mortale. Overall, Corpus Mortale is slightly more melodic in comparison to Iniquity and a little more deliberately paced. Still, this is highly brutal material that can compete with the greats of the genre. “A New Species of Deviant” is also a treat for solo/lead fanatics as Corpus Mortale has put a significant amount of impressive leads into this album. The production is typical for the band, being earthy, organic and gritty. The guitar tone is thick and clear with a deep bass sound that rumbles audibly in the background. Vocally, Martin Rosendahl hasn’t changed his approach since his days in Iniquity and his recognizable style immediately provides the band with an air of familiarity. The CD features the artwork of the label's in-house artist Joel Sta and is possibly the best Corpus Mortale has had so far. Not groundbreaking by any means, but “A New Species of Deviant” is a solid effort from a band that has little to prove at this point. Not quite the technical album one would expect from Neurotic Records but a timeless and classic sounding record that will appeal to fans both old – and new school. Be sure to give this one a listen if you are into death metal from the early to mid ‘90s.
