Featuring guitarist Tomas Andersson and bassist Roger Blomberg from defunct Swedish thrashers Denata and former Witchery drummer Mique Flesh, Freevil comes about as a combination of the recognizable traits of the both acts. The high energy riffing and blistering tempos from Denata remain the backbone while the high pitched vocals and typical heavy metal song structures and dynamics betray the influences from Witchery. Overall, this could be described as an industrial version of Canada’s 3 Inches Of Blood without the hardcore vocals. The piano, synthesizers and effects are a nice touch but don’t add anything in particular to the proceedings. Overall, Freevil would be better off abandoning the synthesizers and effects altogether. As expected, the material is far from original but the flawless performances, breakneck delivery and enthusiasm that spills from this recording is undeniable. Mastered by Peter in De Betou at Tailor Maid Productions “Freevil Burning” comes with a crystal clear sound that will put many new bands to shame. The artwork, design and lay-out are excellent in its combination of old school paintings and digital rendering. The cover art itself reminds a bit of Avulsed’s “Gorespattered Suicide” although it is not nearly as offensive. Overall, Freevil has delivered an admirable debut. With some additional tweaking and streamlining they should be able to deliver some truly interesting industrial thrash metal.
