Fort Worth, Texas death metallers Obsidian Throne are quite something different than what usually originates from those shores. Mixing “Master Of Puppets” era Metallica with early Scandinavian melodic death metal Obsidian Throne have an interesting combination on their hands, yet with “Behind the Veil” is the band’s first recording and that shows. The 7 tracks of this record all feature more than a healthy dose of dynamics, melodies and aggression – but as with any first recording the material isn’t all equally strong. Obsidian Throne would benefit from upping the speed and exploring their melodic side more. “Behind the Veil” is a bit tame and on the relative safe side of things, with the latter tracks going for a more adventurous approach. On the other side, it is not seen often that a band this young has quite a good understanding of contrasting electric and acoustic sections, fast with slow sections and when to let the melody take over. The vocals, both clean and gruff, are fitting but hardly exceptional and the poor choice in vocal lines often takes down whatever effect they could have had. For a first record, the production on this album courtesy of Nomad Studio is quite impressive with a clear guitar tone and a warm, organic tone for the acoustic guitars. The drums sound a bit hollow and miss the oomph needed to really hammer the point home. “Behind the Veil” is definitely a good first recording, but anyone who has heard the Scandinavian pioneers of the melodic death metal genre will find hardly anything new here. Nevertheless, this is an impressive first record and this one comes highly recommended.
