At the Gates Of Confusion ()

Heavy on ideas but low on execution "At the Gates Of Confusion" is a messy amalgation of death -, thrash - and black metal. Through out the 6 cuts that comprise this record there's no stand out track to speak of and all tracks have a strange cut-and-paste feel to them. The material bounces in and out of genres without taking any direction properly or keeping an idea long enough to build and expand upon. Combining uptempo thrash riffing with sparse black metal shrieks (Mutant comes to mind), sudden blast sections and deep grunts with contrasting semi-acoustic doom sections Confusion Gods try to appeal to as many genre fans as possible yet fail to address the essence. It's hard to pinpoint what exactly Confusion Gods is aiming for. "At the Gates Of Confusion" is exactly what it title implies, a confused little EP that holds absolutely no merits for a band around for a decade. The production is little better than the usual demo level. The drums feature too prominently, the guitar tone could use a little punch and the vocals push away the string instruments every once in a while. Artwork, design and lay-out are fairly good considering the rest of this package. Confusion Gods are a confused bunch, indeed. If they don't streamline their ideas and evolve technically to contemporary standards, they'll be dwelling unnoticed in the underground for another ten years. In all honesty, I can't recommend this to anyone in particular.
