The second of two discs released in 2007 by prolific Australian one-man black metal project Striborg. As expected, influences from Burzum, Mutiilation and Xasthur run rampant in all their stripped down, bare bones glory. The riffing is still fairly simple and repetitive with hypnotising keyboards to add maximum effect. Drumming is still only to complement the guitar, the rolls and fills are more interesting than in the past – but still the sloppy execution pans much effect which they could possibly convey. Variation isn't the band's strength and while the repetitive riffing has its initial effect on a first listen, it becomes borderline burdensome when "Solitude" is revisited multiple times. Striborg here deliver a little more structured approach to their minimalist ambient black metal. The production is typically non-existent. The guitar tone is no more than a fuss that holds absolutely no punch whatsoever, the bass is in there somewhere although it is hard to pin down. The keyboards are ethereal and dreamy but could have had much more effect with good production values. The vocals are everything we have come to expect from this unit, sounding desolate and coldly detached. Production qualms aside, Striborg will appeal to fans of the first wave of Scandinavian black metal. This band doesn't conform to typical genre standards in writing and although solidly adhering to the genre's production principles it's the daring and individual songwriting approach that puts Striborg head above the majority of underground one-man black metal bands. Once again not for the squeamish or the faint of heart.
