Despite amateurish production values and horrible lay-out printing "Welsh Black Metal" by South Wales multi-instrumentalist Bleiddwn-y-Nos holds enough promise and potential to warrant more attention than the average demo. Released only half a year after its first recording "Call Of the Cyhyraeth" this second demo sees Arawn growing into their own and while Bleiddwn-y-Nos' songwriting craft is still in its infancy it's clear to see that when given the proper means and timeframe Arawn can possibly become an interesting entity in the pagan and folk black metal field. The music is powerful, atmospheric and brooding in a similar vein as the first three Hecate Enthroned albums, despite being not as technically and compositionally accomplished. The creation of atmosphere is one of the strengths of its composer. The limited array of riffs does show halfway through and the lack of interesting dynamics in the drum department do show around the same time as well. The production on this record isn't quite what it should be. The keyboards need to be punched up a notch the guitar tone is rather flat sounding and holds not nearly enough punch. The bass is audible and dominates the whole with the other instruments lying low in the mix. The artwork, design and lay-out are abysmal with amateurish photography, hideous font setting and low standard printing. It would be beneficial for Arawn to let a third party handle the graphic side of the band. Overall, "Welsh Black Metal" sounds familiar and promising. There's plenty of place to evolve and grow, while there aren't too many underground black metal projects that can muster the same amount of maturity on their second demo. Black metal and folk metal fans both might find something of interest here. Be sure to secure your copy as there are only 100 available at the moment.
