On their third album, their first for Dental Records, Swedish death metallers Insision present a lethal US oriented stab at the genre. From the onset of the first track 'A Ravenous Discharge' it's clear that the band has grown in leaps as far as songwriting is concerned compared to their 2002 Earache Records debut "Beneath the Folds of Flesh" and its revered 2004 follow-up "Revealed and Worshipped", which was produced by the late Mieszko Talarczyk (Nasum) at Soundlab Studios, Sweden. Still the band brings an infectious mix between (early) Cannibal Corpse, Amon Amarth and Deranged with slithering chaotic leads with catchy vocals and tons of groove to boot. While most material is mid to fast paced, there are epic doom numbers such as the +6 minutes cut 'Into the Cold' which casts its brooding shadow over the rest of the material and is a definite highlight of "Ikon". Insision is a band of high skilled musicians which becomes clear from the complex guitar lines in tracks such as 'Breathing the Black Dust' or 'Depleting the Non-Being'. 'Entangled In Thorns' is a re-recorded cut from the band's "Promo 2000" - of which were only 1500 copies made. The production is the best a band of this ilk could wish for. The guitar tone is brick heavy while retaining enough clarity, texture and depth. The bass rumbles audibly and the drums tone is excellent with a heavy snare sound, while the bass drums thump healthily. As was the case with "Revealed and Worshipped" the artwork for this record is nothing short of amazing as well. While I wasn't too fond of their debut "Beneath the Folds of Flesh" Insision have proven that a couple of years of experience can do wonders for any band and "Ikon" stands as a testament to that. Fans of classic US and European death metal can blindly pick up this record.
