Sporting 2 former Marduk members and two Sargatanas Reign members Devian is a high profile pairing, to say the least. Erik Hagstedt (vocals) and Emil Dragutinovic (drums) are probably the two most commonly known members, whereas guitarist duo Jonas Mattson (ex-Nominon) and Marcus Lundberg provide the record with an incredible wide array of riffs that are technical, epic and always evil sounding. In comparison to his work with Marduk and the Legion drummer Dragutinovic is quite restrained here, refraining from blasting all the time. Instead delivering midpaced tasteful fills and rolls. Hagstedt is his recognizable self, although it is to be noted that his voice has obviously suffered a lot from his tenure with Marduk. Devian sound as a distinctively European band that has a knack for Swedish melodic sensibilities that characterized the early pioneers of the genre. Devian isn't doing anything new with the genre, but nevertheless its clear that there are experienced and skilled musicians at work here. Through out the album's 10 tracks it is proven time and time again that the old veterans still are head and shoulder above the new crop of bands as far as songwriting is concerned. "Ninewinged Serpent" was recorded at Sweden's Art Decay Studio whilst mixing duties were handled by Fredrik Nordström at Studio Fredman. The production is somewhat similar to Vital Remains' "Dechristianize" without sounding too overly digital in the process. The artwork, design and lay-out is amazing and in execution quite similar to Decapitated's "Organic Hallucinosis" or Vader's "Impressions In Blood". Devian debut convincingly with "Ninewinged Serpent" and in a couple of years they'll show their true potency and undeniable talent once the unit has been together longer.
