In 2006 Memphis, Tennessee act Burial Within debuted with their self-titled demo. That recording sounded halfway promising but did little to establish the band as a future competitor due to its haphazard ideas and execution. In comparison to the self-titled release this offering sees Burial Within going into full-on death metal direction while retaining their metalcore sensibilities albeit without the expected breakdowns and gang choruses. Overall, "Demo 2007" is a very Swedish affair that reminds a fair bit of that country's early '90s death metal sound. The addition of great leads provides the material with a face its own and if Burial Within could expand on that in future material, they'll have a winning combination on their hands. Another notable improvement is the fluency of the material. Whereas their first venture saw forced sections into their songs, here the tracks flow naturally and nothing feels added or out of place. Technically the band has improved in leaps and bounds as well. On this record Burial Within sounds much more tight-knit and advanced than on last year's promo. Vocally, Scott's screamed grunt is just as Swedish as the rest of the package. The production is comparable to the early Sunlight Studios recordings by Tomas Skogsberg. The artwork for this "Demo 2007" is actually another improvement this band gone through. It's moody, abstract yet fits perfectly with the band's current course. Together with bands such as Arsis, Deathevokation this band is amongst the promising units that brings old school sensibilities back into the US death metal scene. Not groundbreaking by any stretch of the imagination, but this is way more interesting than 95% of all low-budget underground death metal released these days.
