French occult death/black metal combo Darkshine have been around since '95 and now present a collection of material, both new and old on their latest promo "Ten Years". New tracks ‘Whore for God' and ‘Never Exorcise Me' come off as a strange mix between European death metal and traditional Scandinavian black metal, particularly in their use of melodies. The music is mostly midpaced with faster parts to contrast the whole, generally Darkshine sounds like a mix between "Onward to Golgotha" era Incantation or "Dawn Of Possession" era Immolation mixed with "Antichrist" and "Pentagram" era Gorgoroth. The material from 2004's "Stigma Diaboli" and 2000's "Lupus Infernorum" is notably more convincing, faster and more black metal oriented than the band's current output. Drummer Ghyis especially shows off his tricks in this older material, something sorely missing in the band's current material. The production is reasonable considering the circumstances and the limited budget available and while it sounds occasionally muffled and muddy Darkshine possesses enough technical chops to display their potential. Artwork, lay-out and design of this record are quite poor, underdeveloped and do not help Darkshine in any favorable way. All things considered Darkshine hold promise but it comes as no surprise that they haven't landed a record deal yet. If the band shift in a direction such as their older output and raise the technicality of the whole a notch or two - they'll be a contender in no time. They aren't quite there yet, but in a few years they'll be ready for the big leagues, though.
