As the name of the project implies they are heavily inspired by the military nobility of pre-industrial Japan, namely the samurai. The music is mostly mid-paced with a good variety in riffing, tempos and overall delivery. Varela's drumming is surprisingly varied, restrained and tastefully executed. The production is pretty good with a rugged guitar tone that is both clear-cut and heavy, although it would benefit from sounding a bit meatier. The drums sound organic, warm and aren't as triggered as to usual contemporary standards. The bass guitar is audible and forms a nice backdrop for the rest of the instruments. Barnes is workmanlike behind the mic, double tracking his usual barked grunts with screams. Shuriken Cadaveric Entwinement is quite restrained in comparison to Varela's over-the-top military death metal act Debodified and a lot better for it. Tracks such as 'Screams of the Genma', 'Breaking the Stranglehold of the Apocalypse' and 'As the Rising Sun Bleeds' prove that plenty. Halfway through the record, it is unfortunate that despite its technical strengths the band's rather limited palette of riffs and lack of enthusiasm start to show. The songwriting is compact in its epic scope and no track really outstays its welcome. Artwork by Pär Olofsson (Deeds Of Flesh, Odious Mortem, Spawn Of Possession) is breathtaking and fits well with the band's historical Japanese military concept. This duo isn't reinventing the wheel in any shape or form, but Shuriken Cadaveric Entwinement is an admirable addition to the underground technical death metal scene thanks to their forward-thinking lyrical stance. For fans of semi-technical brutal death metal such as Aeon, Broken Hope, "Legion" era Deicide, Dying Fetus and (early) Suffocation.
