Portugal’s Mons Lvnae (Latin for Mount of the Moon) debut convincingly with “Seven Winds” (overall, the band’s third release) albeit that it is a bit on the unadventurous and safe side of their particular genre. Atmospheric folk metal that takes plenty influence from the symphonic genre, such as (early) the Gathering and Theatre Of Tragedy. The vocal interplay is played off convincingly, but it’s nothing that hasn’t been done before. The addition and prominent feature of a classic flute and piano brings an air of originality to Mons Lvnae take on the genre. With occasional inclusion of Oriental rhythms and vocal lines they have already taken a step out of the genre’s limitations. The production is acceptable, but not stellar – sounding little stronger than a demo, which given the circumstances is pretty good given the limitations of this band. The riffing is solid, if not a bit predictable. Drums and bass lie prominently in the mix and often are more adventurous in their departments than the guitars. Overall, Mons Lvnae would benefit from adding a little more aggression or diversity in tempos to their morose, downbeat sound or giving the string instruments some more breathing space, thus allowing them to break from the constant mid-paced nature that plagues “Seven Winds” considerably at this point. Expanding further upon their Oriental influences will also forward their profile in the international scene. The artwork, lay-out and packaging of this record is nothing short of impressive. Mons Lvnae holds a lot of promise at this point, only if they tap into their potential and dare to thread beyond the known and expected genre limitations – they’ll be an international player in just a few short years.
