Belgian pagan black metallers Huldrefolk debut convincingly on their Slava Satan Records debut “Eeuwenhout” – taking cues from classic Scandinavian traditional black metal of the mid nineties while adding acoustics and mid tempo sections of the pagan metal genre. The album is rife with oppressive atmosphere and a majestic feeling of epicness. In that sense this is pretty much reminiscent of (early) Burzum, Gorgoroth and classic Mayhem. Such atmosphere can be felt on ‘Galgenlied’ (‘Song Of Gallows’) or the re-recorded ‘Pest Alchemie’ of their 2006 demo of the same name. The riffing, vocals and drumming is spot-on and actually a frightening, carbon copy example of what made Scandinavian, particularly the Norwegian kind, so appealing in its original and formative years. In parts and pieces, especially the faster sections, Huldrefolk remind of Belgian veteran black metallers Enthroned, circa “Prophecies Of Pagan Fire”. The production is outstanding considering the genre with a warm toned, organic tone that features the guitars and drums prominently, while simultaneously giving the bass guitar and bass drums enough room to provide this record with a healthy bottom end. Huldrefolk might be far from original at this stage in their career, but given that they inject their pagan black metal assault with a little more indentity and face of their own, they might just become the next big thing in the Belgian, if not, international black metal scene. “Eeuwenhout” comes highly recommended to pagan and black metal fanatics.
