"Merciless Hammer Of Lucifer" – the band's fifth record – builds upon the promise set with 2006's "Hail Infernal Darkness" and sees the band comfortably taking their place alongside long-standing institutions such as Incantation and Immolation. With riffings and drum work similar to classic Incantation and (Sylvain Houde era) Kataklysm the band stride forward with the technical prowess and top notch songwriting skills which puts many of their contemporaries to shame. Be it the moody opening doom sections in 'A Final Solution' or 'Funeral Pyres of Annihilation', the tortured, circular leads and the eerie death riffs of 'Sickness Redeemer', 'Bloodbath of Renewal' or the impressive title track Drawn and Quartered need not to rely on blastbeats or shocking images to get their message across. Drawn and Quartered produce death metal the way it was played in the early-to-mid '90s; the way it was meant to sound: dark, oppressive, sadistic and hateful. The production of "Merciless Hammer Of Lucifer" is very similar to Incantation's "The Infernal Storm" record in texture, earthiness, clarity and depth. The artwork, lay-out and design by Gabriel Byrne fits perfect with the remainder of the band's catalogue. Those into classic US death metal can't go wrong with this. "Merciless Hammer Of Lucifer" comes highly recommended.
