After their more than respectable, if not a bit uneven 2005 comeback album "Frozen In Time" Florida death metal veterans Obituary present with "Xecutioner's Return" probably their best material since 1990's "Cause Of Death". Churning out 11 cuts which last about 2-3 minutes tops, except for 'Feel the Pain', 'In Your Head' and 'Contrast the Dead', this new record sees a reinvigorated Obituary bringing their classic death metal sound into the 21st century. The second album not to feature guitarist Allen West, the band hired Ralph Santolla (ex-Deicide, ex-Iced Earth) and the result is an album that bears more than a passing resemblance to 1990's "Cause Of Death" which featured session guitarist James Murphy. "Xecutioner's Return" is blessed with a similar earthy production that puts much emphasis on Obituary's bottom end groove while retaining all needed clarity in the vocal and guitar department. As was the case with Obituary's 1990 vintage classic, the guitar leads take the forefront and the interaction with the band's characteristic swamp riffs breathes a sinister atmosphere their comeback record gravely missed. "Xecutioner's Return" mixes the gloom and doom of "Cause Of Death" with the dread and speed of "Slowly we Rot". Donald Tardy has stepped up the plate and delivers his most versatile and varied work behind the drum kit to date. Vocalist John Tardy is his usual self and his recognizable inimitable vocals are much cleaner produced this time around. Guitarist duo Trevor Peres and Ralph Santolla both shine in their respective strengths, while bassist Frank Watkins provides "Xecutioner's Return" with a thick and meaty bass sound that rumbles audibly in the back. Obituary is back in all their glory.
