    Nocturnal Emissions - Nyctophobia (re-issue)

Wydane przez Displeased RecordsRok wydania Kraj AustraliaNapisał Wouter7Komentarze (0)Striborg - Nocturnal Emissions - NyctophobiaOriginally released on Asgard Musik, this compilation brings together 2 out of print CD-r demos (which were originally released in 2001 and 2002, respectively) from Tasmanian black metal act Striborg (who take their name from the Slavonic wind god) with new artwork and packaging. The music on this disc is quite on the doomy side of the genre, with bleak and oppressive additional instrumentation such as keyboards and similar instruments. The guitars are fuzzy and the drum machine isn't the best around, but fits well enough with the genre presented here. The bass is thick and adds a slight heaviness to the proceedings that is otherwise notably absent in most underground black metal. There's a strong lean towards classic Satyricon, circa "The Shadowthrone" - yet the majestic songwriting and overall sense of epicness isn't quite on par with that band. Also, the Scandinavian tinged riffing regularly reminds of (early) Immortal and (early) Gorgoroth. Vocally, Striborg makes me think of Mayhem's Maniac. Overall, there's a hint of Mortiis' early darkwave ventures present, albeit with a raw black metal foundation that only enhances the contrasting atmospheres. Both "Nocturnal Emissions" and "Nyctophobia" consist of four tracks each. Both seem to loosely carry some sort of concept, which is an additional strong point. The lay-out and packaging are fittingly desolate for a record of this kind. Displeased Records has once again done an admirable job unearthing these hard-to-find recordings. Fans of Xasthur, Mütiilation and Ildjarn will find much to like here.
