On their Goregiastic Records debut Japanese death metallers Infernal Revulsion present a catchy and potent slab of US death metal. Inspired by practitioners such as Fleshgrind, (early) Internal Bleeding and "The Bleeding" era Cannibal Corpse "Devastate Under Hallucination" is a well-rounded and expertly written death metal album that despite its lack of originality is a good listen. Most of the material is groovy, bass-heavy and quite catchy with occasional fast – and slam parts to spice up the proceedings. Infernal Revulsion adheres to the old school genre standards and complements its fast, blasting sections with a good amount of mid-tempo sections in order to differentiate the tracks enough. In the vocal department it's quite standard US fare with undecipherable, guttural grunts that offer little in the way of variation. A couple of tasteful horror samples are thrown in through out the album that add to the macabre atmosphere yet never break the flow of things. The production is incredible for a debut offering, with a thick and meaty guitar tone, a healthy rumbling bass that's audible and a neatly produced sound for the various parts of the drum kit. The artwork by Tony Koehl (Internal Suffering, Abysmal Torment, Malignancy) is fantastic and adds a lot to the oppressing atmosphere an album like this aims for. Besides promising newcomes such as Infected Malignity and genre veterans such as Intestine Baalism the guys in Infernal Revulsion have released an admirable debut with "Devastate Under Hallucination". Now we can only hope they'll be able to carve out a niche of their own and step out of the shadows of its inspirators.
