Polish old school death metal duo Throneum have been around since 1996 and have released various albums through international obscure labels. "Deathmass Of the Gravedancer" is their first for Dutch label From Beyond Productions and like Throneum's past records, this one is for the old school death/black metal fans especially. Inspired by the likes of Asphyx, Bestial Warlust, Necrovore and Possessed the band has specialized itself in recreating the brooding atmospheres these legendary bands set with their genre-defining efforts. The production is fittingly low-key and raw with enough grittiness around the guitars and drums. The vocals by The Great Executor are mostly shouted rasps, pretty much in the vein of (early) Necrophagia and in some instances like Benümb. The drumming by Thermonuclear Philosopher is quite intense for usual genre standards and lends an air of modernity to this otherwise viscerally strong assault. The black-white artwork and lay-out by Chris "Thorncross" Moyen is up to his usual standards and will appeal to black metal fans in particular. Throneum has delivered another strong record with "Deathmass Of the Gravedancer" that despite its underproduced nature never fails in its intent and execution. Despite their tendency to release a lot of products on an annual basis, the quality isn't affected on this record. One can only imagine what Throneum would sound like if they recorded in one of Poland's more technically advanced studios with a name producer to truly take their sound to another level.
