Texas traditional doom metal veterans Solitude Aeturnus have released a number of veritable genre classics over the years; with important masterworks such as "Into the Depths of Sorrow", "Through the Darkest Hour" and "Adagio" to their name, they have gained a formidable reputation. "Hour Of Despair" is the band's first foray into DVDs and this one proves rather nicely why Solitude Aeturnus is such a respected institution in their genre. Led by founder/guitarist John Perez and charismatic frontman Robert Lowe the band delivers a compact summary of their lengthy career in 12 tracks. Recorded at Stodola Club in Warsaw, Poland on 12th February 2007 Solitude Aeturnus is captured tastefully in all their solemn, down-to-earth glory with multiple cameras, giving each member equal screentime while focussing on the dramatic gestures by frontman Robert Lowe - for the occasion dressed in a monk's suit including a white crucifix – and the energetic attitude of guitarist Perez. Additionally, this DVD comes with two bootlegs recordings from the band's personal archives. Two short sets are included, one from Fort Worth, the other from Dallas, both shot in their hometown Texas. On top of that there's a rather candid and interesting interview with Perez and Lowe about the band's past, present and future. Sound is available in Dolby Surround 2.0 and 5.1. Other goodies include desktop wallpapers, band history, discography, photo gallery and a number of other neat features. Packaging and lay-out are outstanding and very detailed in execution and composition. As always, limited edition comes with an additional live CD of the main show. Much alike (early) Candlemass and (early) Cathedral this band combines powerful, variated sombre songwriting skills with top notch musicianship and a strong vocal presence that truly lifts the band into a league all their own. Pick it up now, essential for all serious doom metal fanatics.
