On their first record since 2004's "Warkult" US death metallers Malevolent Creation sees the return of a number of former members. As a result this new album is possibly the band's most versatile and brutal record to date. Returning to the fold are vocalist Brett Hoffman, bassist Jason Blachowicz and guitarist Jon Rubin, who together with mainstays Phil Fasciana (guitars) and Dave Culross (drums) deliver a blistering assault on the senses with "Doomsday X". The record starts off with 'Cauterized' that instantly feels classic with Hoffman's typical rapid fire semi-shrieked vocals, the band's characteristic riffs and the frantic drumming. 'Culture Of Doubt' has a nice groove and the extended lead section towards the closing section ends the track on a high note. 'Deliver My Enemy' is a high octane mid-tempo death/thrasher with an (admittingly) great guest solo by Slipknot guitarist Mick Thomson. 'Archaic' and 'Buried In A Nameless Grave'are both two mid-tempo, epic cuts with incredible pumping grooves and riffings. Instrumental piece 'Prelude to Doomsday' is drummer Dave Culross' moment to shine and in the 3 minutes and a half, he more than proves his worth. The production courtesy of Mercury Recording Studios in Pompano Beach, Florida and resident producer/session drummer Gus Rios is crystal clear with a distinct, clear-cut guitar tone that holds enough grittiness while the bass remains audible at all times. The drum sound is nearly perfect with a warm double bass – and nicely thick snare drum sound. Concluding, the digitally rendered artwork is incredible feels like a modern day interpretation of Suffocation's classic "Effigy Of the Forgotten" cover. Malevolent Creation has once again outdone themselves.
