Finnish brutal death metal combo Sear strike back with their second record on Foreshadow Productions after their 2005 debut "Begin the Celebrations Of Sin". The material on "Lamentations Of Destruction" has a lot in common with hyperspeed death metal acts such as (classic) Angel Corpse, Diabolic, Krisiun and to a lesser degree Hate Eternal. The band presents a potent mix of death – and Scandinavian black metal, the latter especially in the vocal department and occasionally in riffing and song structure. Vocalist H. Hyytiäinen proves to be excellent behind the mic, but uses his clean vocals far too less in favour of rather monotoneous grunting. Drummer L. Laaksonen provides the band with the necessary kick and punch. While his work is nothing groundbreaking, it is probably the best part of this record. "Lamentations Of Destruction" is a adequate product for the times, but it never aspires greatness; while all expectations are met, Sear fail to write something out of the ordinary or something that they can truly call their own. How the band goes from scorching death/black metal tempos to occasionally moody doom-inspired sections is refreshing to hear again. The production is good with a meaty guitar tone, audible bass lines and a drum sound that is both clear while retaining enough organic grittiness. Fitting artwork and lay-out result in a record that is good in its own right, but yet aches to be taken up to a higher level. Sear could become a very interesting outfit with their next record. Keep an eye on them.
