As was the case with Mastodon, Relapse Records have decided to issue this "best of" compilation around the same time as their Nuclear Blast debut "Ithyphallic" hits the shelves. "Legacy Of the Catacombs" is a combination of band and fan favorites, as well as a bonus DVD containing all of their studio videos. The record starts off with three tracks of their critically acclaimed "Annihilation Of the Wicked" record, namely 'Cast Down the Heretic', 'Sacrifice Unto Sebek' and 'Lashed to the Slave Stick'. Following three tracks are taken of "In Their Darkened Shrines", with the two video tracks 'Execration Text' and 'Sarcophagus'. Additionally, the epic and ambitious 'Unas, Slayer Of the Gods' is included for good measure as well. The next 6 tracks contain the most memorable tracks from the band's first two records, their genre-defining debut "Amongst the Catacombs Of Nephren-Ka" and its impressive follow-up "Black Seeds Of Vengeance". "Legacy Of the Catacombs" is called "a truly crucial release for the seasoned Nile fan or newcomer alike" by Relapse Records, but that's hardly the case, since all tracks on the compilation can be easily found on all the discs the band has put out, so there's no unreleased or previously unavailable material to be found herein. It is, however, great to have the most well-known tracks this band has written together on one disc. The lay-out and design by resident designer/artist Orion Landau is once again outstanding.
