On "The Wanderer and His Shadow" Pantheon I bring epic, pagan black metal alike to (early) Borknagar, Enslaved, Taake and 1349 that has the typical Norwegian melancholic atmospheres. Combining the expected genre elements of thin sounding fuzzy guitars, audible bass lines and acoustic sections with mid-tempo, double bass drumming with the spare use of cellos Pantheon I create a sound that is similar to Satyricon's "The Shadowthrone", Emperor's "Anthems To the Welkin At Dusk" (not nearly as fast, technical or symphonic) or the earlier works of Dimmu Borgir, albeit without the keyboards. All tracks flow rather nicely and are written expertly resulting in a record that is at once familiar while setting out for future exploration of the elements that aren't typically black metal per se. So is the clean singing and the use of choirs a nice variation next to the typical black metal rasps. Solefald's Lazare guests on 'Coming To an End'. The production is similar to Satyricon aforementioned album, if not a lot clearer as far as guitar – and drum tone is concerned. The artwork and lay-out are great and fit excellent with the band's musical endeavours. Pantheon I have delivered a magnificent debut with "The Wanderer and His Shadow" that is sure to please fans of the genre.
